WASHINGTON, D.C. – Rep. Joe Courtney, the Ranking Member of the Seapower and Projection Forces Subcommittee, received the Distinguished Service Award from the National Maritime Historical Society (NMHS). Vice Admiral Al Konetzni, USN (Ret.), a NMHS Trustee and alum of the Naval Submarine School in New London, presented Courtney with the award.
“For years, the National Maritime Historical Society has preserved and promoted our nation’s maritime history—reminding us of our nation’s fundamental identity as a maritime nation, which is instrumental to our prosperity and security. I am honored to represent a district steeped in maritime heritage, going back to pre-colonial days. Thus, I am deeply honored to be recognized by NMHS for my work in the U.S. Congress to strengthen America’s maritime sector, particularly our sea services: the U.S. Navy, the U.S. Coast Guard, NOAA, and the U.S. Maritime Administration,” said Rep. Courtney (CT-02). “I was especially grateful to Admiral Al Konetzni who took the time to join the award ceremony. His legacy of service in the U.S. Submarine Force is revered in southeastern Connecticut, particularly amongst the many submariners who served under him for decades. In addition, the presence of Mr. Jim Noone, USN (Ret.)—Chairman of the NMHS and a key part of “Team Connecticut’s” efforts to save the Groton submarine base from BRAC closure in 2005—was much appreciated.”
Courtney received the award “in recognition of his steadfast efforts to deliver funding for US Navy submarine procurement, most recently as part of the National Defense Authorization Act of 2023 and the FY 2023 Consolidated Appropriations Act,” the National Maritime Historical Society stated.
“We also salute Congressman Courtney’s work with the Connecticut congressional delegation in obtaining funding for the future National Coast Guard Museum, where Americans will have the opportunity to immerse themselves in Coast Guard life and history through interactive exhibits and galleries designed to celebrate, engage, and inspire,” NMHS added.
