Otis Library will host local author and teacher Beth Belliveau as she discusses her two published books. Copies of her books will be available for sale and signing following the program.
Her first book first is titled My Ruined Life and is a parallel story of two middle school-aged siblings. Their family is devastated by a traumatic event. Their father is arrested and imprisoned. Their uncle moves in to help out. Grandma gets very sick. Their family unit changes, friendships pose conflict, the school setting challenges them in different ways.
Her second book is a semi-autobiographical story of bullying titled The Unbroken Target. Colleen endures one year of school being tortured physically and emotionally by the bully that lives next door, so even at home, there is no escape. Her friends are afraid of the bully. They don't want to take any chances that they will be her next target, so they do whatever she directs them to do. Colleen doesn't want them tortured either. She knows the control will end at some point, but when? Will she be able to go to school and feel like a "normal kid" again? She is always waiting for what Dawn, the bully, will do next. And the problem is that Dawn rarely does the work herself. She just sets up all the other kids around to make Colleen feel miserable. What is wrong with Dawn? Something isn't right, for her to spend all this time trying to make someone else feel so unwelcome and sad. When will this all just stop?
Beth has been a teacher for Norwich Public Schools for over 30 years. She began her interest in becoming an author as a young child, watching her father write a trilogy. His passion for writing was a great inspiration to her.
