Homeschooling at Spark Makerspace

This program is designed as three six-week courses for  ages 14-18 years old. All taking place on Thursdays, September 29th to  November 3rd, 10 a.m. - 1 p.m. Students have three courses to choose  from:Draw, Design, Screenprint, LED Light Up Your Clothes or, The Art of  Stained Glass

 

Course descriptions:

 Homeschooling - Draw, Design, & Screenprint

For Homeschoolers 14 to 18 years old, learn drawing and design  techniques for screen printing to print on paper and a T-shirt. This  6-week course, Thursdays, September 29 to November 3, 10 a.m. - 1 p.m,  will teach students drawing and design skills that transfer directly to  the practice of screen printing. This includes the photographic print  process to make a stencil for screen printing. The students will  experience printing on both paper and fabric.

At the end of the class, participants will take home new drawing skills,  the screen of their own work, all of the prints and drawings they have  created, plus a screen-printed zine with the work of each classmate.

  • Students need to provide their own T-shirts for printing (optional).
  • There will be a short break for each session. Bring a snack or beverage if desired.
  • All materials are included in the cost of the class (sketchbook, screen, printing materials provided).

Homeschooling- LED Light Up Your Clothes

For Homeschoolers 14 to 18 years old, learn how to design, program, and  sew LED circuits. This 6-week course, Thursdays, September 29 to  November 3 , 10 a.m. - 1 p.m, will teach students basic hand sewing  techniques and programming language to light up their own LED design.  Students will use a sewable microcontroller, a rechargeable battery,  sewable LED lights of various colors, and conductive thread to add light  and magic to a small garment (like a hat or a vest) or a patch you can  add to a garment.

At the end of this course, students will know how to design an LED  circuit, will have acquired basic hand sewing skills, and will be able  to program and upload code to a microcontroller.

  • Students need to provide a garment to which they will add LED lights.
  • Students are encouraged to bring a laptop computer if they have one.
  • There will be a short break for each session. Bring a snack or beverage if desired.
  • All materials are included in the cost of the class.

Homeschooling - The Art and Skill of Stained Glass

For Homeschoolers 14 to 18 years old, learn the complete process of  stain glass design and creation. This 6-week course, Thursdays,  September 29 to November 3, 10 a.m. - 1 p.m, will teach students basic  pattern setup and how to use the appropriate tools to cut and shape  glass. Students will learn the techniques of copper foiling, soldering,  and framing to complete their piece. Safe practices will be taught for  each piece of equipment as well as chemical and lead handling and  disposal.

At the end of the course, the student will take home a framed art glass  panel approx. 1 sq. ft in size along with the skills and knowledge to  create colorful quality pieces of increased size and complexity.

  • Personal protective equipment will be provided, or you may choose to bring your own safety glasses, mask, and/or apron.
  • Please wear closed-toe shoes.
  • No short shorts, please. (knee-length or capris are OK.)
  • There will be a short break for each session. Bring a snack or beverage if desired.
  • Must be able to stand while using hand tools and light machinery.
  • All materials are included in the cost of the class.

Please note that the course class fees are non-refundable unless the  course does not meet minimum enrollment. If this happens, parents will  be contacted a week ahead of time, and the course will be canceled.
