Concert scheduled near one-year anniversary of the war on Ukraine

Under the baton of Maestro Theodore Kuchar, the esteemed Lviv National Philharmonic Orchestra of Ukraine will perform at Jorgensen Center for the Performing Arts on the UConn Storrs campus on Monday evening, February 13th. The concert will be held just shy of the one-year anniversary of Russia’s war on Ukraine.

When the war in Ukraine began in February 2022, Jorgensen Director Rodney Rock heard stories about artists who were impacted by the Russian invasion.  He then made a commitment to bring as many Ukrainian artists to the Jorgensen stage as possible. He booked the Ukrainian folk-rock quartet Dakha Brakha last fall, and over 600 people were in attendance.

“We are so far removed geographically from Ukraine, and as we come up on the first anniversary of the start of the war, the whole world is facing so many challenges – it’s easy to forget this war is going on,” says Rock. “I feel strongly we must do what we can as performing arts presenters to support these artists who need to survive.”

The Feb 13 concert will open with Ukrainian composer Yevhen Stankovych’s Chamber Symphony No.3, followed by Max Bruch's Violin Concerto No.1 featuring Dr. Solomiya Ivakhiv, and concluding with Beethoven’s Symphony No. 7.  Doors open at 7:00 pm.  Performance begins at 7:30 pm.

Founded in 1902, the Lviv National Philharmonic Orchestra of Ukraine is one of that nation’s largest and most internationally renowned ensembles. Based in the historic medieval city of Lviv, the orchestra carries a rich history and reputation including leadership from some of the most famous conductors in classical music.

Internationally acclaimed for her work as soloist and chamber musician, Ukrainian-born violinist and University of Connecticut School of Fine Arts faculty member Dr. Solomiya Ivakhiv will share the main stage.

A dedicated educator holding a Master of Music degree from M. Lysenko Music Academy in Lviv, Ukraine and a Doctor of Musical Arts degree from Stony Brook University, Dr. Ivakhiv has conducted master classes and chamber music coachings at prestigious learning institutions throughout world. She has performed in solo and chamber recitals at Carnegie Hall, Merkin Hall, CBC Glenn Gould Studio, Curtis Institute Field Concert Hall, Italian Academy in New York City, Pickman Hall in Cambridge, MA, San Jose Chamber Music Society, and many other prominent venues. She currently serves as Associate Professor of Violin and Viola and Coordinator of Strings at the University of Connecticut and is Professor of Violin at Longy School of Music of Bard College.

Dr. Ivakhiv is the 2022 recipient of the Merited Artist of Ukraine, the highest honor awarded to artists in her home country.
