Rep. Joe Courtney, who represents Connecticut’s 2nd district in the U.S. Congress, used his social media platform to address concerns about rising health care costs and food insecurity in his state. In a series of posts between October 31 and November 1, 2025, Courtney called for congressional action and highlighted local impacts.
On October 31, Courtney criticized House Speaker Johnson for halting legislative activity, stating: “While Speaker Johnson shuts down the House to keep lawmakers out of Washington, millions of Americans are about to see their health care costs go up. It’s time for Congress to get back to work, end the shutdown, and prevent a health care cost hike.”
The following day, he addressed growing food insecurity in Connecticut: “Connecticut food banks are seeing a surge demand. I heard that directly from the Gemma Moran Food Center in New London yesterday, who supply 67 local pantries and 6 mobile pantries. The Trump Administration must listen to the orders of two federal judges and keep SNAP benefits” (November 1).
Later on November 1, Courtney discussed upcoming increases in health insurance premiums due to expiring tax credits under the Affordable Care Act: “Open enrollment for Access Health CT health care plans begins today. 22,000 people in eastern CT are facing premium increases because Congress has failed to maintain longstanding ACA tax credits. Yesterday, I spoke to Diane from Danielson, whose premiums are going up from”.
Courtney has represented Connecticut’s 2nd District since replacing Rob Simmons in 2007 and previously served in the Connecticut House of Representatives from 1987 to 1995. Born in Hartford in 1953 and currently residing in Vernon at age 70, he holds degrees from Tufts University (BA) and the University of Connecticut (JD).
