Rep. Joe Courtney, who represents Connecticut’s 2nd district in the U.S. Congress, recently shared updates on social media regarding local representation at the Winter Olympics, government funding legislation, and concerns about student loan caps for nursing degrees.
On February 3, 2026, Courtney posted support for a local athlete: “CT’s Second District is represented on Team USA at the Winter Olympics! Emily Fischnaller from Suffield will return to the Olympics for the third time as part of the USA luge team. Best of luck to Emily. We are cheering you on!”
Later that day, he addressed recent legislative activity related to federal government funding: “I voted to pass a funding bill which provides full-year funding for 70% of the government except for DHS. In the next 10 days, an attempt will be made to put reforms in place to stop ICE’s lawlessness. I have not and will not support full-year DHS funding bill without critical” (February 3, 2026).
On February 4, Courtney criticized provisions in H.R. 1 affecting nursing students: “The Big Ugly Bill (H.R. 1) classified nursing degrees as “non-professional” and capped the amount of student loans available to nursing students at HALF of what’s available for “professional” degrees. We’re in a severe nursing shortage nationwide. This will make it worse!”
Courtney has served Connecticut’s 2nd District in Congress since replacing Rob Simmons in 2007 and previously served in the Connecticut House of Representatives from 1987 to 1995. Born in Hartford in 1953 and currently residing in Vernon, Courtney holds a BA from Tufts University and a JD from the University of Connecticut.
