Families in eastern Connecticut are experiencing increased food costs, according to Rep. Joe Courtney, who posted a series of updates on social media regarding economic and policy issues affecting his constituents.
On July 24, 2025, Courtney stated, “Families across eastern CT are feeling the rising cost of food. Trump tariffs are projected to raise consumer costs even higher by over $200/month. From foods we don’t grow in the US – like coffee and bananas – to locally grown eastern CT produced with higher input costs, every”. He highlighted concerns about tariffs impacting both imported and local goods.
Two days later, on July 26, 2025, Courtney addressed logistical challenges in the town of Scotland: “The small town of Scotland having SIX different ZIP Codes leads to serious consequences for residents. Mail deliveries, absentee ballots, and where to send kids to school are all thrown into confusion by the ZIP Code chaos. This week, the House passed my bill to mandate ONE ZIP”. He noted that these overlapping postal codes have led to confusion regarding mail delivery and public services.
Later that same day, Courtney commented on international humanitarian efforts: “The Israeli Government should stop the stonewalling of the U.N. aid delivery system and put U.N. experienced experts back in control to get help into Gaza ASAP, where famine conditions have set in. Their own military assessment verified the U.N. was effective at providing aid.” He called for changes in how aid is managed in Gaza amid reports of worsening conditions.
Joe Courtney has represented Connecticut’s 2nd district in Congress since 2007 after previously serving in the Connecticut House of Representatives from 1987 to 1995. Born in Hartford in 1953 and currently residing in Vernon at age 70, he holds degrees from Tufts University (BA) and the University of Connecticut (JD).
