On April 12, 2025, Courtney addressed concerns about a proposed $880 billion cut to Medicaid by the GOP. He emphasized the importance of the program, citing that “80% of people in CT who rely on Medicaid are gainfully employed.” The remainder includes full-time caregivers, people with disabilities, or students. He criticized the cuts, suggesting they prioritized the wealthy over the working class. During this announcement, he noted his collaboration with Comptroller Sean Scanlon and other healthcare officials.
Later that day, on April 12, 2025, Courtney’s focus shifted to the tariffs imposed by President Trump, highlighting the influx of concerned messages his office had received. He questioned the legality of these tariffs, pointing out that “Article I, Section 8 of the Constitution vests tariff power in Congress, not the White House.” He urged Congress to reclaim oversight of tariff regulations.
The following day, April 13, 2025, Courtney spotlighted efforts to enhance affordable housing in eastern Connecticut. Courtney’s service in Congress since 2007 follows his tenure in the Connecticut House of Representatives from 1987 until 1995. He was born in Hartford in 1953 and currently resides in Vernon. Courtney is an alumnus of Tufts University and holds a JD from the University of Connecticut, earned in 1978.
