U.S. Representative Joe Courtney, who serves Connecticut’s 2nd district in Congress, recently addressed several national and international issues through a series of posts on his official social media account.

On October 11, 2025, Courtney criticized the White House for its actions during an ongoing government shutdown. He stated, “On the same day that President Trump received his flu and COVID vaccines, he laid off dozens of CDC scientists who crafted the vaccination guidelines his doctors followed. Instead of working to end this shutdown, the White House is using it as an excuse to fire public servants,” referencing recent staff changes at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Two days later, on October 13, 2025, Courtney marked a milestone in U.S. military history. He wrote, “Happy 250th birthday to the United States Navy! Eastern CT is steeped in Navy heritage since 1775. Today, we are the proud Submarine Capital of the World and the home of the Navy’s ‘first and finest submarine base’, Sub Base New London. To all Navy sailors current and former,” highlighting eastern Connecticut’s longstanding ties to the U.S. Navy.

Later on October 13, Courtney commented on recent developments in the Middle East, noting the release of hostages in Israel and Gaza. He stated, “Today’s scenes of the return of the 20 living Israeli hostages brought great relief after two long years. Their belated return, after so much devastation in Gaza, was the result of regional diplomacy – just as was the return of 105 hostages in 2023 after 54 days in captivity.”

Courtney has represented Connecticut’s 2nd district since 2007, succeeding Rob Simmons. He previously served in the Connecticut House of Representatives from 1987 to 1995. Born in Hartford in 1953 and currently residing in Vernon, Courtney holds degrees from Tufts University and the University of Connecticut.
