Rep. Joe Courtney, U.S. Congressman representing Connecticut’s 2nd district since 2007, used his social media platform this week to address several issues affecting his constituents, including the impact of tariffs and health care policy on small businesses, rising gas prices due to international conflict, and a warning about a phishing scam targeting state residents.
On May 4, Courtney highlighted the challenges facing small businesses during National Small Business Week. He wrote: “Small businesses are being hit hard by Trump tariffs and health care cuts. I’ve heard from local small businesses on how these added costs and uncertainty are impacting them. Congress needs to roll back Trump tariffs and restore the ACA” (May 4, 2026).
Later that day, he commented on economic consequences stemming from foreign policy decisions: “Gas Prices rose 21.2% in March due to the war in Iran. That’s the highest one month increase ever recorded. President Trump launched a unilateral war of choice, and the American people are paying more because of it.” (May 4, 2026).
On May 5, Courtney issued a public service announcement regarding fraudulent activity: ” SCAM ALERT A phishing scam is targeting Connecticut residents via text, phone, and email with phony citations, warrants, and fines. The Connecticut Judicial Branch does not solicit payments via unsolicited phone calls, texts, or emails and never demands immediate payment” (May 5, 2026).
Courtney has represented Connecticut’s 2nd District in Congress since defeating Rob Simmons in 2007. Before serving in Congress, he was a member of the Connecticut House of Representatives from 1987 to 1995. Born in Hartford in 1953 and currently residing in Vernon at age 70, Courtney holds degrees from Tufts University (BA) and the University of Connecticut (JD).
