Rep. Joe Courtney, who represents Connecticut’s 2nd district in the U.S. Congress, addressed constituents this week about concerns over rising health care costs and ongoing government shutdown negotiations.
On October 9, 2025, Courtney thanked participants of his recent virtual event: “Thank you to the nearly 10,000 people who tuned into my telephone town hall last night. We had a robust discussion on how to end the shutdown and protect eastern Connecticut from a huge health care cost hike.” The event focused on potential solutions for ending the federal government shutdown and preventing increases in local health care expenses.
Later that evening, Courtney highlighted correspondence from a constituent regarding impending changes to health care affordability: “Lee Burdette Williams wrote into my office describing the steep increase in health care costs she will see if Congress lets Affordable Care Act tax credits expire. Congress can’t keep kicking this down the road. Families will see the cost-hikes in a matter of days when Access”. He emphasized that congressional action is needed to avoid lapses in tax credits tied to the Affordable Care Act.
For those unable to attend his town hall live, Courtney provided access to a recording: “If you weren’t able to join my town hall live last night, you can listen to the recording here.” This ensured broader community engagement with ongoing legislative issues.
Courtney has represented Connecticut’s 2nd District since 2007 after succeeding Rob Simmons. Before serving in Congress, he was a member of the Connecticut House of Representatives from 1987 to 1995. Born in Hartford in 1953 and currently residing in Vernon, Courtney holds degrees from Tufts University and the University of Connecticut.
