WASHINGTON, D.C. – On June 30, Congressman Joe Courtney (CT-02), a senior member of the House Committee on Education & the Workforce, issued the following statement after the U.S. Supreme Court ruled on Biden v. Nebraska.
“Today’s SCOTUS decision denying partial loan forgiveness–pursuant to the 2003 HEROES Act—is another example of the tortured opinions the Roberts court uses to overturn clear statutory language to achieve a political result. Unfortunately, the decision was clearly pre-ordained by this new majority. It now behooves both the Congress and the U.S. Department of Education to mitigate the negative fallout.
“My office and I have been in constant contact with the Department to communicate strategies for loan borrowers to plan for the resumption of loan payments. As a senior member of the House Education and the Workforce Committee, I am determined to continue pressing my colleagues to adopt reforms to allow debt refinancing to reduce debt burden—just like homeowners and consumer borrowers.”
