WASHINGTON, D.C. – On May 23, Rep. Courtney applauded the Navy for awarding $1.07 billion to Electric Boat for two FY2024 Virginia class submarines. This contract was made possible by legislation Rep. Courtney authored.
“Another $1 billion in federal funding is on its way to Electric Boat and its suppliers to sustain the two-a-year build rate for new Virginia class submarines. By delivering this funding, the Navy is sending a strong signal to the industrial base to increase capacity while also ensuring we make good on the AUKUS security agreement and sustain our required force structure,” said Rep. Courtney (CT-02). “Electric Boat is well-positioned to deliver the high-quality submarines our Navy and partners need, and will continue our region’s longstanding role as the nation’s leader in submarine manufacturing.”
The $1.07 billion announced today supports advanced procurement of long lead materials and components to support two Virginia class submarines in FY2024, full funding for which the President requested in his budget proposal to Congress earlier this year.
The two submarines planned for FY24 will be built as options on the Block V multi-year procurement contract, completed in December 2019. The authority for the contract was provided in Courtney-authored legislation included in the FY2018 National Defense Authorization Act to provide multiyear procurement authority for up to 13 Virginia-class attack submarines in Block V. This authority allowed the Navy to sustain the two a-year rate at a minimum, and add additional ‘option’ boats to sustain or increase submarine production.
