NORWICH, CT– On July 7, Congressman Joe Courtney (CT-02) issued the following statement after Connecticut received a federal agriculture disaster declaration due to sub-freezing temperatures this spring. The declaration comes after Rep. Courtney led federal lawmakers in urging Secretary Vilsack to declare a Secretarial Disaster Declaration.

“I applaud Secretary Vilsack for heading our call to declare a Secretarial Disaster Declaration in response to sub-freezing temperatures. The weather caused widespread damage to countless crops in crucial points in their growing seasons. Given the timing of the freezing temperatures, Connecticut’s agricultural producers are not able to recover their losses for the season, leading to more than $3 million dollars in losses. Now, thanks to this action, farmers will be able to recoup losses and unlock resources to recover from the damage.”

Farmers impacted by the weather events are encouraged to reach out to the Farm Service Agency for support.
