Rep. Joe Courtney, currently serving in the U.S. Congress representing Connecticut’s 2nd district, has expressed his views on various issues through a series of tweets. These posts address concerns over proposed cuts to social programs, amendments to federal workers’ compensation laws, and oversight of private data management.
On May 6, 2025, Courtney voiced concerns about potential cuts to Medicaid and SNAP by the GOP. He stated that these programs are essential for maintaining health and nutrition among residents. In his tweet, he mentioned “I continue to hear from eastern CT residents who are seriously concerned about the GOP plan to cut Medicaid (HUSKY in CT) & SNAP.” Courtney further noted that such cuts would limit services for millions and announced his action by signing a discharge petition.
The following day, May 7, 2025, Courtney highlighted an issue faced by federal workers injured on the job. He pointed out restrictions preventing them from seeing Nurse Practitioners or Physician Assistants under current regulations. His tweet stated “Federal workers who get injured on the job should be able to see a medical provider of their choice when they get hurt.” Alongside Rep. Tim Walberg, he introduced a bill aimed at amending FECA to allow more flexibility in choosing healthcare providers.
Later on May 7th, Courtney addressed privacy concerns related to Elon Musk’s handling of Americans’ private data. He tweeted “Elon Musk & his DOGE tech bros has been given full control over Americans’ closely guarded private data – including social security numbers.” Emphasizing the need for congressional oversight regarding this matter.
Courtney has served as a U.S. Congressman since replacing Rob Simmons in 2007 and previously served in the Connecticut House of Representatives from 1987 to 1995. Born in Hartford in 1953 and residing in Vernon, he holds degrees from Tufts University and the University of Connecticut.
