Rep. Joe Courtney, U.S. Congressman representing Connecticut’s 2nd district since 2007, used his social media platform to highlight the impact of recent federal policies on health care and local industries. In a series of posts made between February 24 and February 25, 2026, Courtney shared personal stories from constituents and criticized former President Trump’s actions regarding health care tax credits and tariffs.
On February 24, Courtney posted about his guest for the State of the Union: “I’m grateful to host Mystic’s Lee Burdette Williams as my guest for the State of the Union. Lee & her wife are paying over 300% more per month in health care costs because President Trump blocked bipartisan efforts to extend health care tax credits. Lee’s story is a painful”.
The following day, he continued addressing the issue: “Despite what President Trump may say at the State of the Union, the reality is that his policies are making the affordability crisis far worse for Americans like my guest Lee Burdette Williams. Thank you to Lee for coming to Washington to share her story and to advocate for the”.
Later on February 25, Courtney shifted focus to trade policy and its effects on Connecticut businesses: “Trump tariffs are making beer more expensive. I met with Athletic Brewing, a major non-alcoholic brewery based in Milford. Brewers in CT and nationwide are getting hit with new 50% tariffs on aluminum cans from Canada that aren’t even made anywhere in US. It’s ludicrous tariffs”.
Courtney has served in Congress since replacing Rob Simmons in 2007 after previously serving in the Connecticut House of Representatives from 1987 to 1995. Born in Hartford in 1953, he currently resides in Vernon and holds degrees from Tufts University (BA) and University of Connecticut (JD).
