U.S. Representative Joe Courtney, who serves Connecticut’s 2nd district, has used social media to address the ongoing government shutdown and related legislative issues. In a series of posts, Courtney outlined his concerns about congressional inaction and promoted efforts to mitigate the effects of the shutdown.
On October 7, 2025, Courtney announced a public event: “Tomorrow at 6:30PM, I’m hosting a live telephone town hall to discuss the government shutdown and the urgent need for Congress to prevent a health care cost hike. The following day, he criticized House leadership for inactivity during the crisis: “We are a week into the government shutdown, and Speaker Johnson continues to cancel “in-session” days for the House of Representatives. It’s been THREE WEEKS since the House was in in-session. To end this shutdown, at a bare minimum, Members of Congress should be convened and”
On October 9, 2025, Courtney highlighted legislative steps he supports: “Today is day 20 of the Mike Johnson-shutdown of the U.S. House — day 10 of the full government shutdown. Along with bipartisan negotiation to end the shutdown, the House must be re-opened for a vote on the bipartisan Pay Our Troops Act. I’m a co-sponsor of this bill to ensure”
Courtney has represented Connecticut’s 2nd district in Congress since 2007 after replacing Rob Simmons. Before his tenure in Congress, he served in the Connecticut House of Representatives from 1987 to 1995. Born in Hartford in 1953, Courtney is 70 years old and resides in Vernon. He holds a BA from Tufts University and a JD from the University of Connecticut.
