Rep. Joe Courtney, a U.S. Congressman representing Connecticut’s 2nd district since 2007, used his social media platform to address the ongoing government shutdown and its potential impacts on health care costs.
On October 15, 2025, Courtney posted: “As we enter week three of the shutdown, Speaker Johnson has closed the U.S. House for 25 straight days and counting, hoping members stay away and the public won’t notice. Not me. I’m here. Let’s get back to work.”
Later that same day, he wrote about health care concerns stemming from federal policy changes: “President Trump’s health care cuts won’t just impact small segments of the country. They are going to hurt the entire health care system. Thank you to Heather Brauth from Salem, CT, a registered surgical nurse & union leader at Backus Hospital in Norwich, for coming to”
The following day, Courtney again referenced both the government shutdown and rising health care costs: “It’s now week three of the government shutdown – and day 27 since Speaker Johnson shutdown the House of Reps. The clock is ticking for people facing a huge increase to their health care costs. Congress needs to get back to work, reopen the government, and prevent a health”
Courtney’s recent statements reflect his long-standing role in Congress; he succeeded Rob Simmons in representing Connecticut’s 2nd district beginning in 2007 after previously serving in the Connecticut House of Representatives from 1987 to 1995. Born in Hartford in 1953 and currently residing in Vernon, Courtney holds degrees from Tufts University (BA) and the University of Connecticut (JD).
